The purpose of this book is to present an historical hypothesis set forth in the first chapter and elaborated in the succeeding ones for the consideration of scholars in divers fields of learning. It is important that the reader understand two terms which appear throughout and are given a special meaning. The Great Frontier is one and the Metropolis is the other. The first term is applied to all the new lands discovered at the opening of the sixteenth century; the second refers to the community of western Europe without regard to political divisions.
