This book describes how quilt making was taught to Hawaiian women by the missionaries and later developed into an Island art. The women's handiwork, woven with designs of plants or animal forms or historical incidents, was used for counterpanes, wall hangings and other display. One of the most unique designs displayed in this book is a large quilt with one half devoted to an interpretation of the banishment of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden and the other half devoted to two figures, Elenale and Leinaala, in European court dress. Color and black & white photographs by Raymond Sato. A clipping from an Hawaiian Newspaper regarding the opening of the quilt exhibit & release of this book is included. 78 Pgs.
